Outcomes data collection is an important part of any successful recovery program.
It is hard to identify how successful your treatment center or rehab program is if you can’t measure your outcomes data. At the core of the importance of outcomes data collection is the simple question: how successful is our program at helping individuals in recovery, today and in their future journeys?
More and more stakeholders in the addiction recovery industries such as: accreditation organizations, payers, city, state, and local government, and overall seekers of recovery based help are looking for organizations who collect, report and improve their methods via outcomes collection. As a treatment center, rehab and overall addiction recovery focused organization, you should really be taking outcomes data collection seriously sooner than later.
Since 2018 The Joint Commission has started developing an entire standards accreditation program which relies heavily on organizations collecting and reporting their outcomes data. With nearly 20 years of behavioral healthcare insights, the Joint Commission has echoed the importance of measurement-based care methods for service to those in recovery. The Joint Commission wants organizations to use the insights gained via outcomes collection to help monitor the progress of the program, establish goals for improvement, and aid in decision making for care, treatment, or services offered. The Joint Commission encourages and requires organizations to identify an instrument to collect outcomes data, and to have actionable goals in accordance with those findings.
This year The NAATP has created an entire tool-kit dedicated to its focus on outcomes data, which was developed by enrolling 748 participants from addiction recovery organizations across the country to create the tool kit. This was a three year process in developing the outcomes data collection tool kit by NAATP! I would say this is a serious and large effort by the NAATP to learn about outcomes data collection, and set the standards they believe necessary for accreditation.
We know outcomes data collection is currently and further becoming a necessity for organizations who pride themselves in being of a higher standard, but if you’re still wondering why you should collect outcomes data here are a few points to make..
You should collect Outcomes Data to:

- Identify Trends in your data, and learn what services that you offer are give the best return on effort per the positive impact they are doing – then place more resources towards those services. You can also see what isn’t working, and eliminate those services
- Learn about your clients, each client will be different and react differently to certain services, build individualized data for each client to better tailor their recovery progress
- Market yourself, with outcomes data you will be able to differentiate yourself from other treatment centers while clearly and confidently reporting how your program is unique and better. This will help you with accreditation organizations, grants applications, and referrals.
